About The Course
Foundations of Academic Writing for Lecturers provides a comprehensive introduction to the core principles, structures, and practices essential for producing high-quality scholarly texts. Designed for academicians and educators from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, this ICE Institute MOOC offers a flexible, self-paced learning environment supported by digital modules, video lectures, guided readings, and formative assessments. The course adopts a progressive, practice-centered approach, enabling participants to build confidence and proficiency in academic writing through iterative drafting, feedback, and revision.
The curriculum is organized into six sections that reflect the major components of a research article as well as the essential skills needed for effective academic communication. The course begins by establishing foundational concepts of academic writing, including its conventions, macro structure, and the characteristics of rigorous scholarly argumentation. Next, the participants learn how to write the introduction and literature review. They focus on how to position the study, explain the research gap, and combine relevant works. The methodology section provides guidance on describing research design, procedures, and analytical approaches in a clear and replicable manner.
Subsequent modules examine best practices for writing results and discussion sections, emphasizing clarity, coherence, and the integration of findings with existing scholarship. Participants also learn how to formulate a compelling and logically aligned conclusion that highlights contributions, implications, and future research directions. The final section equips participants with practical strategies for editing and proofreading their own writing, addressing issues of coherence, academic style, grammar, and consistency.
- Throughout the course, a project-based learning model ensures that participants apply concepts directly to their own scholarly writing. Following the program step by step, participants will have produced a full draft of a research article and strengthened their capacity to communicate research effectively within academic and professional communities.
