Zijing Huang obtained his M.D. degree from Zhongshan Medical School, Sun Yat-sen University in 2012 and gained his Ph.D. degree at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC), Sun Yat-Sen University in 2017. He is now an attending doctor in Joint Shantou International Eye Center (JSIEC). As a registered doctor in ophthalmology, he is able to master the diagnosis and treatment of multiple ocular diseases, including cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, ocular trauma, etc. He masters independently surgical procedures including phacoemulsification, excision of pterygium, and intravitreal injection.
Huang’s research focuses on the mechanism of retinitis pigmentosa, a retinal degenerative disease leading to progressive human blindness. He found that microglia, a subset of retinal cells with immune property in the retina, underwent specific programmed cell death named “necroptosis”, leading to retinal neruroinflammation and degeneration. He also demonstrated that microglia shifted its phenotype from an anti-inflammatory “M2” to a pro-inflammatory “M1” state, exacerbating retinal degeneration, which could be reversed by α1-antitrypsin administration. His studies elucidated basic mechanisms of pathogenesis and helped to devise clinically relevant approaches for retinitis pigmentosa. Huang has now published 12 papers in international journals including the Cell Death Differ, Front Immunol, Eye, etc. He leads a Foundation for Distinguished Young Talents in Higher Education of Guangdong, China, and is a major participant in a key program of National Natural Science Foundation of China. He holds a Chinese patent for an intraocular lens fitted with a drug-released device.
