About This Course

From the perspectives of geography, history, and art, the course aims to help students understand the operatic roles, decorative graphics, carving techniques, modeling colors, performing movements, and other visual art expressions of Chinese shadow play, and grasp its artistic rules and stylistic characteristics. With an in-depth examination of history and culture, this course integrates traditional craftsmanship with the creation of art, demonstrating the artistic quality and aesthetic pursuit of traditional Chinese shadow play in an all-round way.

The course consists of "modeling and history, style appreciation, production techniques, shadow play production", combined with exercises to improve students' knowledge of traditional Chinese shadow play.

A multi-disciplinary innovative team of instructors, composed of professional teachers from the Academy of Fine Arts and nationwide inheritors, traces the stylistic features of traditional Chinese shadow play to their historical origins, highlighting the intrinsic connection between the stylistic features of shadow play and the genes of traditional Chinese culture. By drawing the essence of modeling in Chinese shadow play, this course inspires students to enrich and develop their artistic creativity, and to pass on this traditional Chinese folk art with a thousand-year-long history.

 

Requirements

Chinese shadow play, a form of folk drama with a long history and profound cultural connotations, embodies the essence of Chinese traditional modeling and performing arts, and is an important representation of the oral and intangible culture heritage of humanity that is deeply rooted in China's traditional culture. Learning this course requires students to have a strong interest in Chinese tradition culture and Chinese shadow play,and to experience the legend of light and shadow of the world.
