About This Course

This course introduced the overview of tourism policy and planning. It systematically delivered the principles and procedures of tourism formulation and implementation. Aiming at a sustainable tourism development, tourism impact and special issues were discussed. After this course, the participants will enable to understand how the tourism policy and principles impact tourism development in different scales, to discuss the historical development of tourism planning in the world and in China, and the trends of tourism development, to apply the principles of tourism formulation and implement to the practices of tourism planning, to assess the tourism sustainable development referring to the tourism impacts, and to apply the theory of tourism planning into special tourism cases and issues.

By the end of the course, you'll be able to...

Understand how the tourism policy and principles impact tourism development in different scales.

Discuss the historical development of tourism planning in the world and in China, and the trends of tourism development.

Apply the principles of tourism formulation and implement to the practices of tourism planning.

Assess the tourism sustainable development referring to the tourism impacts.

Apply the theory of tourism planning into special tourism cases and issues.

Professor Carson Lewis Jenkins #1

Professor Jenkins has 50 years of tourism teaching, research and student supervision experience at university level. He has been a consultant for most of the major international development organizations and has worked in over 80 developing countries. He is Emeritus Professor of International Tourism at the Business School, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, and currently Visiting Professor at the College Tourism and Service Management in Nankai university, China. He is a member of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism. Special areas of interact are in tourism policy and planning and the role of tourism in development. #1

Professor Bihu Wu is a professor#2

Professor Bihu Wu is a professor at College of Urban and Environment Sciences, Peking University, China.

He is currently the director of the Tourism Research and Planning Center in College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, Peking University.  He is also an expert member of China Tourism Reform and Development Advisory Committee and vice president of China Tourism Education Association. His research interests include tourism planning, destination marketing and tourism education. Professor Wu has been the editor-in-chief of several well-known journals.

With outstanding academic achievements, he was elected as an academician of the International Academy for the Studies of Tourism in 2015 and ranked No.1 as the most influential scholar in the management discipline of Chinese Philosophy and Social Sciences in 2017.#2

Professor Ludwig G. Rieder #3

Nine years as Director of Research Policy and Planning at the New South Wales Department of Tourism in Australia and over thirty years in the private sector as chairman of Challenger Hotel Corp., Tourism Director of Perry Development Finance, and as tourism management consultant and advisor. Mr. Rieder is a cofounder of Asia Pacific Projects, Inc. a tourism and infrastructure development services firm founded in Manila, Philippines in 1992. Mr. Rieder advises UNWTO, ADB, UNDP, USAID, ASEAN Secretariat, and national governments throughout the Asia and Pacific Region.

In China, he led the teams that prepared 20-year tourism master plans for Sichuan and Yunnan Province as well as designing tourism planning projects and interventions for Shandong, Gansu, Guangxi Zhuang AR, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Quinghai and Jilin province.#3

Professor Geoffrey Wall #4

 

Geoffrey Wall is the Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management and for 11 years was Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research at the University of Waterloo (Ontario Canada N2L 3G1). He was educated at Leeds University (B.A., 1966), Cambridge University (Cert. Ed., 1967), University of Toronto (M.A., 1968), and Hull University (Ph.D., 1970). He taught at Sheffield University and the University of Kentucky before moving to Waterloo in 1974. He has long been engaged in environmental geography and tourism teaching and research and acted as a consultant in various sectors at home and abroad. He has published more than 200 papers in refereed academic journals, more than 100 book chapters and has edited a number of volumes on the implications of global climate.#4

Prof. Kun Zhang #5

Dr Kun Zhang is currently an associate professor at the School of Tourism and Service Management, Nankai University. She got her PhD degree from Kassel University in Germany. Her research mainly focuses on tourism destinations, tourists’ perceptions and tourist's behaviour. #5
