Currently, the majority of drugs are administered via oral route using tablets, capsules or syrup. However, this delivery system has some drawbacks resulting in low bioavailability of the drug administrated. Therefore, it is important to develop different delivery system. Transdermal drug delivery system is one of strategies which have being utilized for overcoming the problems mentioned above. Transdermal drug delivery system used skin as the application site and the drug will be absorbed systemically via dermal blood vessels. Microneedles is a promising method for enhancing transdermal drug delivery system. Such delivery system has been widely used globally for delivering both small and macromolecules for the treatment of various diseases. It is essential to understand and introduce microneedles as a new technology to the public, university students and healthcare professionals. This MOOC aims to introduce the microneedles as drug delivery system to the participants. In this MOOC, the participants will learn about the types, materials for preparing microneedles, manufacturing process, evaluations of polymeric microneedles, and applications of microneedles as drug delivery system.
The language of instruction used in this MOOCS is English. The participants will require 3 x 60 minutes to complete all of this MOOC materials. This MOOCS is carried out asynchronously online using a self-paced or self-directed learning method which prioritizes student activity in the learning process, namely student-centered learning through ICE-Institute. The content in this class is copyrighted and intended solely for educational purposes. Thus, students are hereby warned that sharing any learning materials or content from this class with individuals or platforms outside the course is strictly prohibited.
After completing this MOOCS, participants are expected to be able to:
[1] Explain the classification and materials for preparing microneedles
[2] Explain the manufacturing process and evaluations of polymeric microneedles
[3] Explain the applications of microneedles as drug delivery system
The passing grade course is a minimum score 55/100. There will be 3 quizzes and 1 final examination. The weight of total grade for 3 quizzes is 60% and for the final examination is 40%.
