Course Introduction

This course titled "Strategies for Successful Scientific Writing and Publication" will help you understand the basic concepts of scientific writing, especially in preparing articles to be published in scientific journals. The scope of the study material includes original and innovative research ideas, structure and components of scientific work, effective writing skills, and successful publication strategies. The MOOCs have demonstrated significant benefits for both students and the general public in enhancing scientific writing skills and contributing to the development of high-quality content for broader scientific publications. These benefits include the improvement of scientific writing proficiency, a deeper understanding of the process for publishing articles in academic journals, the cultivation of original and innovative research ideas, the expansion of knowledge related to scientific writing, and the acquisition of skills applicable to writing scientific articles across various disciplines. This course contributes to the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education. By enhancing scientific writing skills, fostering innovative research, and expanding knowledge in academic publishing, the course promotes lifelong learning opportunities and improves educational quality, empowering individuals to engage more effectively in academic and research fields across diverse disciplines.

This English-language MOOCs will be run in Self-Paced mode. The method used is Asynchronous through this MOOCs.

The course starts on December 1, 2024, and ends on November 1, 2026. The estimated time to complete this module is 3 sections or 3 weeks, with an estimated duration per session of 4 hours/week.

However, participants; can complete the course earlier than the schedule, if he/she can meet all the requirements of the materials earlier. 

In each learning session, you will have access to a variety of materials including text and videos to enhance your learning experience. Don't forget about the quizzes to make sure you're truly mastering the material. Sounds like you'll have all the tools you need to succeed in this course.

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the subject, participants are:

a)    able to learn techniques for brainstorming, conceptualizing, and refining research ideas that contribute to the existing body of knowledge.

b)    able to identify the typical sections of a scientific paper (e.g., introduction, methods, results, discussion) and understand the purpose and content of each section.

c)    able to learn strategies for selecting appropriate journals for submission, preparing manuscripts according to journal guidelines, and navigating the publication process.

d)    able to improve their ability to communicate scientific ideas clearly and concisely, using appropriate language, style, and tone for the target audience.

Dr. Helen graduated as a Pharmacist from the School of Pharmacy, Institut Teknologi Bandung, a master's degree (M.Sc) in Healthcare Administration, College of Medical and Health Science, Asia University, Taiwan, and completed a Doctoral degree in the Institute of Public Health, School of Medicine, National Yang Ming University, Taiwan. As one of the Associate Professors at the Department of Health Policy and Administration, Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia, Dr. Helen has published peer-reviewed scientific articles in International Scopus Indexed Journals and graduate textbooks (Scopus H-index = 6, ORCID: 0000-0001-5057-0851). In scientific writing and publications, she received an Award for a High-Quality Scientific Article in the Health and Medicine Category, from the Directorate of Intellectual Property Management, Deputy in Strengthening Research and Development, Ministry of Research and Technology/National Research and Innovation Agency (2020). She also has experience as an oral presenter at various International Public Health Conferences and works as a consultant on health policy development project. Her current research interests include the continuum of care in maternal, newborn, and child health, tobacco control policies, health logistics management, hospital pharmacy administration, and non-communicable diseases.

 

2. Dr. Puput Oktamianti, S.K.M, M.M

Dr. Puput completed her bachelor's degree in public health in 2002 at the Faculty of Public Health and her Master's in Management at the Faculty of Economics, Universitas Indonesia. She has served as teaching staff in the Department of Health Policy Administration, Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia since 2006, specifically on the subject of Hospital Quality Management, Strategic Management of Health Service Quality, and Quality Control of Health Services. Dr. Puput has published several articles related to those topic areas in national and international scientific journals (Scopus H-index = 2, ORCID: 0000-0002-8353-3317). She is also a consultant in various agencies such as the Department of Health, Hospital, BPOM, Regency, and GIZ in terms of quality control, such as the development of Department of Health performance indicators. 

 

 

 

 

3. Prof. Dr. dra. Dumilah Ayuningtyas, MARS

Prof. Dr. dra. Dumilah Ayuningtyas, MARS, is a lecturer, and researcher from Health Policy and Administration Department, Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia. She got her doctoral degree in politics and health policy from the Universitas Indonesia and master degree in hospital administration from Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Indonesia. As a lecturer, she teaches Health Policy, Health Policy Analysis, Strategic Planning for Health Care, Strategic Leadership, and System Thinking. Her research focuses on Politics and Health Policy, Hospital Management, Health System, and Human Resources Management, including Vulnerable Groups, and Human Health Resources in Border Areas. Her other research interests include leadership and community empowerment/ participatory and qualitative methodology. She also involves in health policy development and advocacy activities as a consultant. Her performance in health policy has been proven by the liveliness of her writing, publications, research, health policy, and support program as resource persons in training, workshops, seminars, and conferences. She has published many articles related to those topic areas in national and international scientific journals as well as scientific books (Scopus H-index = 11, ORCID: 0000-0002-7621-326X). She published books and contributed to several book chapters in public health, which become the teaching materials in many respectable universities across Indonesia. The ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement and Journal of Public Health (KESMAS), and Journal of Indonesian Health Policy and Administration are three journals of five under her supervision and review. She also received a notable amount of research grants both at the national and international levels, allowing various public health projects to be implemented.
