Welcome to Digital Tech and Terrorism module. 

This module discusses the importance of digital technology in terrorist movements. The use of digital technology has facilitated terrorists to maintain their existence. At the same time, the world has not yet agreed on the extent to which terrorist activities using digital technology pose a unique threat, even though global agreement exists on the importance of responding to terrorism through various forms of counterterrorism policies. Therefore, this lecture discusses the role of digital technology in terrorism, what dangers it poses and how countries, international organizations and non-state organizations respond to this.

This module discusses: 1) the purpose of the of digital technologies by terrorist organizations; 2) definition, purposes and elements of cyberterrorism; and 3) responses of the governments to cyber activities of terrorists.

The learning objectives of this module are: 1) to understand the types of digital technologies that have so far facilitated terrorist activities; 2) to understand the goals of terrorist activities in cyberspace and how these activities facilitate terrorist individuals and terrorist organizations; 3) to understand policies that have been and are being implemented to overcome terrorist activities in cyberspace and how effective have these policies been.

This course is entirely delivered in English.

Ali Abdullah Wibisono, Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations, Universitas Indonesia

Ali Abdullah Wibisono is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Department of International Relations and the Graduate School of Strategic and International Studies, Terrorism Studies Programme, at Universitas Indonesia. He convenes modules of international security studies in Universitas Indonesia, including Theories of International Security, Non-Traditional Security, and Global Security. He also convenes modules at the Terrorism Studies programme, School of Strategic and Global Studies, Universitas Indonesia, including Analytical Framework for Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism, Media, Globalization and Terrorism, and Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE). He writes mostly on the dynamics of terrorism and counter-terrorism in Indonesia and non-traditional security cooperation in East Asia. He focused mostly on terrorism and counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and maritime security in Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific. In this regard, Ali Wibisono has published articles both in journals and media and presented in national / international seminars. Ali Wibisono is also actively invited as a source person in seminars / FGD / workshops related to terrorism, Indonesian foreign policy, and geopolitical rivalry and also as a resource in interviews on national / international TV. The studies conducted by Ali Wibisono included the concept of securitization and civil-military relations in dealing with the problem of terrorism.

 He obtained his Ph. D (2015) and MA (2008) from University of Nottingham, and bachelor’s degree (2005) from Universitas Indonesia.
