"In the fifties, after the completion of the physical revolution, the growth of junior high schools (SMP) and senior high schools (SMA) was so rapid that the need for qualified education personnel (teachers) at that time could be met. In various ways, the government, in this case the Ministry of Education, opened teacher education institutions, such as the First Advanced School Teacher Education (PGSLP) and the B-I Course to educate prospective teachers, especially teachers who served at the junior and senior high school education levels. Despite these efforts, the demand for teachers in North Sumatra has not been met in a short period of time. Starting from this situation, in 1956 several educators in North Sumatra opened a Teacher Education College called PTPG, this idea was sponsored by Prof. Ani Abbas Manopo, SH, who at that time was the Dean of the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge of the University of North Sumatra (USU), G. Sianipar, head of the Community Education Inspection and R.M. Simanjutak, Director of SMA Negeri 1 Medan. PTPG at that time opened majors in English, Education Science, Community Science (later known as Civic Law) and Physical Education. The establishment of PTPG did not last long, because then for the sake of completeness of the University of North Sumatra (established by the University of North Sumatra Foundation in 1952) when it was made a state university in 1955, PTPG merged into one part of the University of North Sumatra under the name of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP)."
