"Around the early 1950s, the people of Central Java in general and the people of Semarang in particular, needed the presence of a University as an implementer of higher education and teaching. The aim was to assist the government in handling and implementing development in all fields, especially in the field of education. At that time, the provinces of Central Java and Yogyakarta only had Gadjah Mada University, which had the status of a State University. While the number of high school graduates in northern Central Java who will continue their higher education at the University is increasing, but because there are still very limited universities, not all graduates can be accommodated. Realizing the increasingly urgent need for higher education, the Semarang University Foundation was formed with Notary Deed R.M. Soeprapto No. 59 dated December 4, 1956 as the first step in establishing a university in Semarang under the name Semarang University which was officially opened on January 9, 1957, with the first University President being Mr. Imam Bardjo.
On the third anniversary of the University of Semarang on January 9, 1960, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno changed the name of the Universitas Semarang to Universitas Diponegoro. This name change was a tribute to the Universitas Semarang for its achievements in fostering higher education in Central Java. This Presidential Decree was later confirmed by Government Regulation No. 7/1961 and Decree of the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture No. 101247/UU dated December 3, 1960. The decree was retroactive from October 15, 1957 with the provision that the date was set as Undip's Anniversary considering that on that date the ""five-day battle"" of the physical revolution took place in the city of Semarang. UNDIP chose this date to continue the ideals of the nation's freedom fighters in filling independence by educating the nation. UNDIP is a form of contribution from the nation's successors to the mandate left by the freedom fighters.
The year 1957 was designated as the founding year of Undip, taking into account the historical reality that Universitas Semarang as a private university - which was established in 1957 was the embryo of Universitas Diponegoro. The determination of Undip's Anniversary on October 15, 1957 was stated in the Rector's report at Undip's 13th Anniversary. Diponegoro University's Education Objective is to produce graduates who have a COMPLETE profile, national and international excellence and can contribute to the development of science, technology, arts, culture and sports. Universitas Diponegoro has 11 Faculties (Faculty of Engineering, Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Faculty of Psychology, Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Agriculture, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Public Health, and Science and Mathematics), 2 Schools (Vocational, and Postgraduate), and 169 Study Programs."
