About This Course

The rapid expansion of illegal wildlife trafficking has emerged as one of the most critical forms of transnational environmental crime, threatening biodiversity and ecosystem integrity. As criminal networks grow more sophisticated, technological advances from encrypted communication platforms to online marketplaces have enabled new methods of smuggling, laundering, and covert distribution across borders. Within the field of International Relations, wildlife crime illustrates how non-state actors exploit governance gaps, weak enforcement regimes, and uneven state capacities. This course examines wildlife crime as a cross-border security challenge, emphasizing the need for strengthened capacities. Anjani Tri Fatharini, S.IP., M.A., is a lecturer in International Relations at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Diponegoro University. She earned her bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta with a concentration in Asia–Pacific Studies, and her master’s degree from Universitas Gadjah Mada with a specialization in Global Humanitarian Diplomacy. Her research focuses on transnational environmental crimes, human security, grassroots movements, and transnational activism, alongside broader interests in humanitarian issues and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
